The Taming of the Shrew vs. 10 Things I Hate About You

 The Watchlist & Must Read

The romantic comedy, "10 Things I Hate About You", is a 1999 film directed by Gil Junger which is a modern adaptation of the Shakespeare play, "The Taming of the Shrew." Both follow the lives of two sisters as they experience complicated relationships and love.

The Taming of the Shrew

"The Taming of the Shrew" written by Shakespeare in the 1590s follows two sisters, Bianca and Katharina (Kat), of the wealthy Baptista. This is a story that takes place in Padua where Petruchio arrives in search of a rich wife. Petruchio's friend, Hortensio, is one of many men in a chase to win Bianca's heart.

  • After Katharina's hostile response to Petruchio, he remains consistent in attempting to "tame the shrew" and win over her heart.
  • Petruchio shows Katharina how unattractive a bad temper can be by abusing his own servant and the priest of their wedding. She then realizes that in order to find peace she must agree with anything Petruchio says or does.
  • Bianca has many pursuers but may not get married before her older sister because those are their father's wishes. In order for Hortensio to gain her father's blessing he must be a man of wealth.
  • Hortensio along with another poses as a tutor for Bianca in the hope of winning over her heart.
"The Taming of the Shrew" embodies romance and comedy yet demonstrates each character's self-discovery, love story, and acceptance.

10 Things I Hate About You

In this adaptation of "The Taming of the Shrew" we are set in a high school in Seattle following two sisters and their love experiences. Bianca, the younger of the two, cannot date until her older sister Kat does.

  • Kat has a strong personality and it is difficult for someone to be a match for her so a boy named Cameron decides to make a plan to find someone for Kat, and he chooses his friend Patrick.
  • Patrick goes along with this plan because he is being paid to try and get Kat to like him. As they spend more time together real feelings start to develop.
  • Cameron has his eyes set on Bianca, the popular girl, who is interested in another boy but quickly realizes his true intentions and begins to see Cameron more favorably.

Recommendation

The movie adaptation of the Shakespeare play shares a nearly identical plot and shares common themes as the original such as:
  • Love
  • Status
  • Self- Discovery

My recommendation would be to skip reading the play and watch the film. The movie will give you a modern take on a Shakespearian plot encompassed with romance and comedy.
