It Happened One Night vs. Night Bus

The Watchlist & Must read

The original rom-com movie “It Happened One Night” was inspired by the short story “Night Bus” by Samuel Hopkins Adams. Both of these tell the story of a woman who escapes a situation she no longer enjoys being in to search for a new life. These women then meet someone on the trip who they connect with and develop a deeper understanding of one another and themselves as a result.

It Happened One Night

“It Happened One Night” tells the story of Ellie Andrews, a wealthy heiress, who escapes her father because she is in love with someone he does not approve of. Along her journey, she crosses paths with Peter Warne, a witty newspaper writer who is currently in a slump and sees Ellie as a sensational story at first. Despite their differences and initially disliking one another, the two embark on a hilarious and heartwarming adventure.

  • As Ellie and Peter travel together, the two realize they have stronger feelings for one another than they initially expected.

  • A misunderstanding prevents the two from communicating with one another.

  • The pair has to learn important lessons about pride, ego, and status in order to be aware of how they can work well together

As Ellie and Peter travel together, they discover not only their affection for each other but also the challenges of the real world. The film's depiction of their burgeoning relationship, filled with humor and heart, has solidified "It Happened One Night" as one of the greatest romantic comedies in cinematic history.

Night Bus

Originally published in 1933, this tale centers around the journey of a young woman named Linda who is disillusioned with her life and decides to leave her husband behind. Linda boards a night bus to escape her troubles, and along the way, she meets another traveler named Kip.

Much like "It Happened One Night," "Night Bus" explores the theme of two strangers thrown together by chance during a journey. Through their interactions and conversations, Linda and Kip develop a deep connection that leads to a profound understanding of themselves and each other.

Recommendation

My recommendation would be to read the short story “Night Bus” and watch the film “It Happened One Night.”

Frank Capra, the director of "It Happened One Night," found inspiration in Samuel Hopkins Adams' "Night Bus." He saw the potential for a heartwarming and comedic story in which two dissimilar characters discover love and understanding on an unexpected journey. While the film took creative liberties and developed its unique characters and plot, the essence of two strangers bonding during a shared adventure is undoubtedly inspired by the themes present in "Night Bus."

Both the short story and the film allow the characters to discover things about themselves, learn about one another, become an improved version of themselves, and build a connection.
