Clueless vs. Emma

    The Watchlist & Must read

One of the most popular romantic comedies in the 1990s known as Clueless was directed by Amy Heckerling and inspired by the classic romantic novel “Emma”. This coming-of-age film is a modern adaptation of Jane Austen's 1815 classic that was transformed into a vibrant 1990s Beverly Hills high school setting.

In both, the movie and the book, the main characters are on a journey of self-discovery while discovering some trouble along the way.

Clueless

In the movie Clueless, Cher is a wealthy, fashionable, and witty high school student who seems to love playing matchmaker, but not when it comes to herself.

Flyer for the movie "Clueless" made in 1995

  • Cher and her best friend Dionne, the fashionable and influential duo, take on “projects” that consist of attempting to transform their classmates and find them a romantic partner.
  • The girls take the new girl, Tai, under their wing to give her a makeover and find her the perfect boyfriend.
  • Meanwhile, Cher is starting to develop certain feelings for her ex-stepbrother, Josh who coincidentally shares a love for social justice just as she does.
  • Cher’s attempt to play matchmaker with Tai results in some unexpected outcomes that weren’t in her plans.

Cher goes through a journey of self-discovery as she starts to prioritize personal growth by finding her own flaws and superficial tendencies. Her transformation at the end of the movie shows how her character has evolved and become more self-aware.

Emma

In the novel “Emma,” the young woman is wealthy, independent, and believes she can help others find love and happiness.

Picture of the physical book "Emma"

  • Emma's close friend Harriet Smith, has recently been proposed to by a farmer, Mr. Martin, who Is in a lower social ranking than Emma’s match for Harriet, a wealthy, higher-class man named Mr. Elton.
  • Emma’s close family friend, Mr. Knightly, seems to influence her like no one else, leading them into some conflict along the way.
  • Emma’s matchmaking results in consequences she faces because of her actions and feelings.

Throughout the novel, Emma matures emotionally in her journey of self-improvement and finds herself a love of her own.

  • Self-discovery

Recommendation

My recommendation would be to read the book “Emma” and watch the film “Clueless.

The novel was written in 1815, which takes our minds back to immerse ourselves in 19th-century English society and how navigating the complexities of love would look at that time.

The movie has modernized this story and put it in a narrative that is relatable for the younger generation. Clueless has also left a lasting impression on pop culture for the fashion within the film.

In both “Emma” and “Clueless,” the characters discover that love and playing matchmaker is far more difficult than they had anticipated. Although, in the end, they both show personal growth and maturity in this romantic comedy.
